Pre-Purchase Inspection & Vehicle Health Check in Birmingham
A used car can hide expensive faults behind a cleared dashboard. We scan every system, read its stored history and give you the evidence before money changes hands.

The most expensive used-car faults are the ones you cannot see on a test drive: a DPF quietly filling with ash, fault codes cleared an hour before you arrived, a gearbox adaptation hiding a harsh change, an airbag system with a stored deployment history. A pre-purchase diagnostic inspection exists to surface exactly that evidence.
Our inspection combines a full network scan of every module — engine, gearbox, ABS, airbags, steering, body and more — with the stored data sellers cannot easily hide: freeze-frame histories, code frequency counters, readiness monitors that reveal a just-cleared system, and DPF loading figures on diesels. The result is a clear written summary of what the car is really carrying.
The service is mobile, so inspections happen at the seller's address, a dealer's forecourt or wherever the car sits across Birmingham — Yardley to Walsall. You get the findings before you commit, in time to negotiate or walk away.
What's included in pre-purchase inspection & health check
Full-system diagnostic scan
Every module read — not just the engine — including airbags, gearbox, ABS, steering and body systems.
Cleared-code detection
Readiness monitors and code history examined for signs the faults were wiped shortly before sale.
Diesel health figures
DPF soot and ash loading, injector balance and glow plug status — the expensive diesel surprises, priced in before you buy.
Battery and charging check
Battery condition, charging output and drain indications — the Monday-morning failure predicted on Sunday.
Warning light audit
Every lamp proven to illuminate at key-on and extinguish — catching the removed bulb or masked light trick.
Written findings summary
Faults found, what they mean, and the questions or price conversation they justify — in plain English.
What a diagnostic inspection catches that a test drive cannot
A test drive tells you how a car feels for twenty minutes. The car's own computers hold months of history: how often a misfire code has set, whether the DPF has been regenerating excessively, if the mileage-related counters agree with each other, and which systems have faults stored right now despite a clean-looking dashboard.
The airbag system deserves a special mention. A stored crash-event record or a resistive fault in a seat circuit is invisible from the driver's seat — and directly relevant to your safety and the car's value. Our warning light diagnostics approach is built into every inspection for exactly that reason.
For sellers and buyers alike
Buyers use the inspection to avoid lemons and negotiate fairly. Sellers with good cars use it too: a documented clean full-system scan is a genuine selling point that distinguishes an honest car from the crowd on the marketplaces, and often makes the sale faster.
If you are choosing between two or three cars, inspecting the favourite first usually settles it. Our pre-purchase checklist guide shows the full routine we recommend combining with the scan — paperwork, history and physical checks alongside the electronic evidence.
How pre-purchase inspection & health check works
Book around the viewing
Tell us where the car is and when you are viewing — we fit around it, including evenings and weekends.
Scan at the car
Full network scan, code history analysis and system health figures captured at the seller's location.
Physical sanity checks
Warning lamp audit, battery and charging tests, and a look at the obvious under-bonnet evidence.
Verdict before you commit
Findings explained on the spot and followed by a written summary — buy, negotiate, or walk away, informed.

How is this different from an MOT or a service?
An MOT checks whether a car meets minimum safety and emissions standards on the day; a service maintains it. Neither reads the car's stored fault history across every system. This inspection is diagnostic: it looks for hidden and developing faults — cleared codes, DPF loading, module history — that affect what the car is worth and what it will cost you next.
Can you tell if fault codes have been cleared before the sale?
Usually, yes. Cars track readiness monitors that take days of varied driving to complete after a code clear, plus frequency counters and freeze-frame data in many systems. A car presented with freshly cleared codes shows a distinctive pattern — incomplete monitors across several systems — that an experienced scan reads clearly.
Where does the inspection take place?
Wherever the car is — the seller's home, a dealer's premises or a workplace car park anywhere in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Private sellers are generally happy to host it once they know it takes under an hour and needs nothing from them but access to the car.
What if the inspection finds a major fault?
Then it has done its job. You will have the evidence, an explanation of what the fault means and what it typically involves to put right — the basis for a renegotiation, a repair agreement, or walking away before the problem becomes yours. Most buyers say the inspection pays for itself in that moment alone.
Do you inspect all makes and models?
Our equipment covers the overwhelming majority of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars on UK roads, including full-system access on mainstream makes. For very new or niche models with restricted access we will say so when you book, rather than turn up and deliver half an inspection.
How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?
Around 45-60 minutes at the car for the scan, history analysis and checks, with the written summary following the same day. It fits comfortably inside a normal viewing appointment, and we can usually attend at short notice — we are open 24 hours.
Should I still check the car's history paperwork?
Absolutely — diagnostics and history checks complement each other. Outstanding finance, write-off markers and mileage records come from a proper history check; our pre-purchase checklist guide lays out the paperwork side alongside the electronic inspection so nothing is missed.
Can you inspect a car I am selling instead?
Yes — a documented clean scan is a strong selling point, and if it does surface a stored fault, you can choose to fix it or price honestly with the evidence in hand. Several sellers tell us the scan report is the first thing serious buyers ask about.
