Diesel & AdBlue Diagnostics in Birmingham
Diesel engines fail differently from petrol ones. We diagnose AdBlue countdowns, injector faults, turbo problems and cold-start issues with diesel-specific tests.

Diesel engines have their own fault universe: high-pressure fuel systems working at enormous pressures, turbochargers, EGR circuits that coke themselves up, glow plugs, DPFs and — on newer cars — AdBlue (SCR) systems that can count down to a no-start if they detect a problem. Generic diagnosis misses the diesel-specific evidence.
Our diesel diagnostics is built around those systems. Injector balance and leak-off behaviour, rail pressure control, turbo boost response, glow plug circuit testing, EGR flow and AdBlue dosing and NOx sensor analysis — each measured properly, so the report names the failing component rather than the system that noticed it.
Mobile across Birmingham, we see diesels where they work — vans on driveways in Erdington, family estates in Moseley, and high-milers that commute the M6 daily. If your diesel's problem involves the filter specifically, DPF diagnostics goes deeper there.
What's included in diesel & adblue diagnostics
AdBlue (SCR) system diagnosis
Countdown warnings, dosing faults, crystallised injectors, pump and NOx sensor problems — and what the countdown really means.
Injector testing
Balance rates, electrical tests and leak-off behaviour to identify the injector that is dragging the engine down.
Turbo and boost faults
Boost pressure versus demand, actuator and vacuum control, and the split hoses and sticking vanes behind power loss and whistle.
Glow plug and cold start
Individual plug and controller testing for the lumpy, smoky cold starts that get worse every winter morning.
EGR and intake problems
Flow tests and position feedback for coked EGR valves and swirl flaps causing hesitation, smoke and lights.
Fuel pressure diagnosis
Low and high pressure sides measured — lift pump, filter, metering valve and rail pressure control behind hard starting and cutting out.
The AdBlue countdown: what it is really telling you
SCR systems dose AdBlue into the exhaust to convert NOx into nitrogen and water. When the system detects a fault it cannot work around — a failed NOx sensor, a dosing injector crystallised with deposits, a dying pump — it starts a mileage countdown to a no-start condition, because legally the car may not run with its emissions system defeated.
The countdown is not a sales trick and topping up the tank rarely cancels it: the fault is in the system's hardware or sensing, and our guide to AdBlue problems explains each common cause. Diagnosis reads the SCR module directly and tests the dosing and sensing chain, which is the only route to a countdown that stays cancelled.
Smoke signals: reading a diesel by its exhaust
Experienced diesel technicians still read smoke like a language. Black smoke under load points at over-fuelling or under-boost — injectors, air leaks, turbo. Blue smoke suggests oil — turbo seals, valve stems, crankcase ventilation. White smoke on cold starts that clears is often glow plugs; white smoke that persists can be unburnt fuel from poor compression or injector spray patterns.
Smoke narrows the field; measurement closes it. Combining what the exhaust shows with rail pressure, boost and injector data is how a diesel gets a first-time diagnosis rather than a sequence of hopeful parts.
How diesel & adblue diagnostics works
Describe the diesel's behaviour
Countdown showing? Smoke colour, cold-start trouble, power loss — and the car's mileage and journey pattern all matter.
Diesel system scan
Engine, SCR and fuel system modules read; live diesel data captured at idle and under load.
Component-level tests
Injectors, glow plugs, boost control and fuel pressure tested individually against specification.
Findings in plain English
The failing component, the evidence, the urgency — and whether the car is safe to keep using meanwhile.

My AdBlue warning says the engine won't restart in 500 miles. What should I do?
Take it seriously and book diagnosis promptly — the countdown is real, and when it reaches zero the car will not restart after being switched off until the fault is fixed. Topping up AdBlue only helps if the tank was simply empty; if a sensor, pump or injector has failed, only diagnosis and repair cancels the countdown.
Can an AdBlue fault be caused by the fluid itself?
Yes. AdBlue has a shelf life and degrades with heat and age, and contaminated or diluted fluid upsets the NOx conversion readings. Crystallisation around the injector is another common finding. Testing distinguishes fluid problems from hardware failures — fluid is cheap, NOx sensors are not, so the order of testing matters.
Why is my diesel hard to start on cold mornings?
The classic cause is glow plugs: one or two failed plugs make starting lumpy and smoky; several failed and the car may refuse entirely. Weak batteries, tired starters and low fuel pressure produce similar symptoms, so we test plug resistance and current draw, battery cranking and rail pressure build-up to separate them.
What makes a diesel lose power and whistle?
A whistle with power loss usually means boost escaping — a split hose or intercooler — or a turbo wearing. Sticking variable vanes, faulty actuators and blocked intake systems also cut boost without the noise. Live boost-versus-demand data under load identifies which, before anyone quotes for a turbo.
Can you tell which injector is faulty without removing them?
In most cases, yes. Balance-rate data at idle and under load, electrical signature tests and leak-off measurement together single out the offending injector with confidence. Removal and bench testing remains the final word in stubborn cases, but the vast majority are identified on the car.
Is black smoke from a diesel an MOT problem?
Excessive smoke is an MOT failure and also a symptom — typically over-fuelling or under-boost from injectors, air leaks, turbo or EGR faults, or a neglected air filter. It tends to worsen as the cause progresses, so diagnosis at the first sign usually finds a smaller problem than diagnosis at test time.
Do you diagnose diesel vans as well as cars?
Yes — vans share their engines and systems with cars and add harder working lives. We diagnose diesel vans across Birmingham, including AdBlue and DPF problems on working vehicles where downtime costs money; the 24-hour service exists partly for exactly that situation.
My diesel judders at low revs. Is that the injectors?
It can be — an injector delivering unevenly shows up most at idle and light throttle. But juddering also comes from dual-mass flywheel wear, engine mounts and EGR behaviour. Injector balance data separates fuelling causes from mechanical ones quickly, which is why we measure before attributing it.
